TOKYO – Dentsu Inc. announced that it has concluded a contract to be the exclusive* display advertising partner in Japan for global communications platform provider Skype Technologies S.A. as of July 2011. The company will start selling Skype’s digital inventory, which will appear in the “Home” tab of Skype for Windows (version 5.1 and above) with immediate effect.

With an average of 170 million monthly connected users worldwide1 making calls domestically and internationally and approximately 30 million concurrent users at peak times2, Skype’s reach and engaged user base make it an attractive platform for brands to market their products. Popular with both business users and consumers alike, Skype offers rich communications ranging from free Skype-to-Skype audio and video calling, to Group Video Calling and making low cost calls to landlines and mobiles all over the world.

Dentsu and Skype will offer advertisers an opportunity to be part of the Skype experience through ‘Skype Home’ which provides a large masthead space for advertisers to display rich and interactive ads. Skype users are shown to spend more time on Skype Home – an average of 2 hours3, as compared to other non-Skype platforms, providing advertisers an excellent opportunity for targeted, dynamic advertising.

The display advertisement will be designed to deliver the advertiser’s message directly to Skype users, featuring the following:

1) A large-sized advertisement, larger than a typical banner ad, appears on the Home tab as default when Skype for Windows starts. With one click on the ad, it expands to twice its original size. It will go back to the original size by clicking CLOSE.

2) Interested users will see richer, interactive content in the extended ad after clicking on the original. In addition, the ad can be linked to the advertiser’s official website just like other web banners to offer users more details.

3) The number of advertisers will be limited to one per day to avoid the ad from being lost in competitors’ ads.

4) Users who wish to hide the ad can do so by simply clicking on “Hide Ad.” The ad can also be displayed back again.

1 For the three months ended 30 June 2011
2 As of March 2011
3 Source : Nielsen NetView Japan May 2011, time spent per person per month

This is a first step in providing a Skype solution for advertisers in Japan, and Dentsu and Skype will continue to explore various advertisement options to better enable enterprises to market their brands.

*For advertising campaigns that are not multi-national or multi-regional in nature.

TOKYO – Dentsu Inc. and Facebook, Inc. announced an agreement under which Dentsu will become the official representative of Facebook’s sales and marketing support to companies in Japan.

Under this agreement, Dentsu, as Facebook’s official ad sales representative in the Japanese market, will provide consultation on effective Facebook Page (see Note 1) development, exclusively market Facebook Premium Ads, and offer new marketing strategies utilizing Facebook that are tied into ad placements in the mass media to advertisers in Japan.

“Dentsu will be a valuable partner for us as we seek to support marketers in Japan to connect and engage with their customers,” said Blake Chandlee, Vice President & Commercial Director, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Emerging Markets, Facebook. “Dentsu understands the unique social marketing opportunity on Facebook, and will work directly with brands here to help them create and implement campaigns that will impact their businesses in meaningful ways.”

“As communication styles diversify, social networking, which directly connects consumers to other consumers, has become a vital communications medium in the world today,” said Dentsu Executive Officer Akira Sugimoto. “I believe that our collaboration with Facebook will play a key role in our initiatives to further strengthen links between consumers and corporations.”

Facebook has more than 500 million users worldwide, and many brands and businesses around the world are already integrating Facebook as part of their marketing activities. Campaigns in which advertisements in Facebook are linked to a wide variety of advertisements in the mass media are becoming increasingly apparent.

Through this alliance, Dentsu will propose and implement new communications strategies and marketing activities utilizing the Facebook platform to advertisers and media companies, in addition to creating new advertising models that will generate new revenue streams.

cyber communications inc., a subsidiary of Dentsu Inc., will act as the media representative for sales of advertising space on Facebook.

Looking forward, the Dentsu Group will provide optimal solutions for the new marketing activities required by companies in this age of social communication.

The main points of the agreement are as follows.

Main points of the business collaboration agreement

As Facebook’s official ad sales representative in the Japanese market, Dentsu will obtain from Facebook the latest technical information and examples of how to use the services, and will provide consulting services to advertisers and media companies.
With the cooperation of Facebook, Dentsu will create Facebook Pages that maximize the platform’s functions in order to provide added value to advertisers and media companies.
Dentsu will have exclusive sales rights to the premium advertising space on Facebook for a one-year period from February 18, 2011, and will develop new advertising strategies in Japan that link advertisements in the mass media (such as television, newspapers, magazines and radio) with advertisements on Facebook.
Utilizing the technical support provided by Facebook, Dentsu will develop new plans and business related to advertisements and promotions that utilize the Facebook platform.
Dentsu will proactively incorporate into its proposals to clients Facebook Premium Ads with social context (see Note 2) that Facebook currently offers.

Note 1
Facebook Page
Facebook Pages are for organizations, businesses, brands, celebrities, and bands to broadcast information in an official, public manner to people who choose to connect with them. Similar to profiles, Facebook Pages can be enhanced with applications that help the entity communicate and engage with their audiences, and capture new audiences virally through friend recommendations, News Feed stories, Facebook events, and beyond.

Note 2
Facebook Premium Ads with Social Context
Facebook Premium Ads run with 100% share of voice, and may include any of the following: polls, events, likes, and videos. Facebook ads show when your friends on Facebook have liked or interacted with a certain brand or product. This makes the ads more personalized to individuals and more effective for advertisers.

About Facebook, Inc.
Founded in February 2004, Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Facebook is a privately held company and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

cci Joins as Strategic Investor in Jumptap

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Jumptap, the leader in targeted mobile advertising, today announced an agreement to enter into a capital and business alliance with cyber communications inc. (“cci”), Japan’s leading media representative company wholly owned by Dentsu Inc. Under the agreement, cci will be the exclusive partner for Jumptap technology in Japan and will make a strategic investment in Jumptap.

cci selected Jumptap for its technological innovation and world class targeting capabilities for their ad network, ADJUST which cci’s subsidiary criteria communications inc. (“criteria”) operates. Under the agreement, cci will provide ad targeting services by combining Jumptap’s advanced technology and platform for smart devices along with cci’s existing technology to create a break-through advertising opportunity.

“Our goal is to offer our clients and partners a complete array of services. By integrating Jumptap’s technology, data and targeting expertise we have the potential to deliver the most strategic and comprehensive mobile marketing solutions,” said criteria’s CEO, Shuichi Hiroya. “We believe Jumptap’s technology will keep us on the cutting edge in the market.”

Japanese marketers are showing an increased interest in advertising to consumers through the new platform including smartphone and tablet devices, while media companies, app developers, and content providers are eager to monetize their mobile traffic. Mobile advertising is most successful when it’s personalized and relevant for 24/7 consumers, for whom the mobile device is a central part of their lives. The more consumers value an ad as relevant, the higher the engagement and response rates, which will in turn deliver better advertiser ROI and higher publisher yields.

“This is a leap forward for Jumptap’s global market presence,” said Jumptap CEO, George Bell. “Our relationship with cci, a Dentsu Group company with significant influence and expertise, will greatly accelerate mobile ad penetration in Japan, one of the largest and most influential markets for the development and adoption of smart devices.”

“Jumptap has a strategy of aligning with a select group of prestigious partners,” added Jorey Ramer, Jumptap’s Founder and Vice President of Corporate Development, responsible for international expansion. “We clearly understood that a successful market launch would be predicated upon developing a relationship with the local market leader who could bridge the technological, cultural and business challenges to deliver a market leading solution.”

cci joins Jumptap’s existing investors, including: AllianceBernstein, General Catalyst, Redpoint Ventures, Summerhill Ventures, Valhalla Partners and WPP.

About Jumptap
Jumptap is the leader in targeted mobile advertising. The company operates the largest independent premium mobile advertising network in North America and Europe, with market penetration reaching 63 million unique visits a month in the US alone. Jumptap leverages its highly advanced, sophisticated algorithmic engine and unique IP to deliver the best ROI for advertisers and the highest monetization for publishers.

DUBLIN – Research and Markets has announced the addition of the “Analyzing the Global Advertising Industry” report to their offering.

The global advertising industry is showing definite signs of a recovery, after one of the worst-ever slumps in advertising. Media-buying firms, TV broadcasters and radio and billboard companies are making positive noises about the future. Print advertising looks more promising and several US magazines saw ad pages increase quite dramatically.

The future of the ad industry is not in doubt – things will get better, but only companies that have positioned themselves correctly will be able to capitalize on the upswing. To do this, many firms are looking toward technology as the point of departure for huge returns. The convergence of the Internet with television, the growth of wireless communication, and the increasing use of digital video recorders all offer new avenues and challenges for advertisers. Further consolidation across national borders is also expected as ad firms try to deliver global capabilities in an increasingly competitive market.

Aruvian’s Research’s report on Analyzing the Global Advertising Industry thoroughly explains the global advertising industry by establishing a clear demarcation of the industry components and the top spenders as well as the service providers in the global context. This helps the reader understand the industry in a nutshell overlooking the competitive activity in the industry.

The report also builds a geographical mapping of the major advertising markets worldwide namely the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, Japan, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and the United States. In this section, the report explains each of these markets in detail with their commercial characteristics along with the major players which are active in these markets thereby drawing up the overall business picture for advertising in these markets.

The report presents a future outlook for the global advertising industry in order to better equip the researcher with the projected growth variants for this industry.

NEW YORK – M&A firm AdMedia Partners announced that it acted as exclusive financial advisor to Cheil Worldwide in its acquisition of The Barbarian Group, the highly acclaimed award winning digital creative and marketing company.

“The large US and European agency holding companies have been adding capabilities in Asia for years as they have moved to serve multinational clients in all markets. This deal demonstrates that the Asian advertising holding companies are now working to execute the same strategy by adding strong US capabilities through acquisition,” says Seth Alpert, Managing Director at AdMedia Partners. “Similarly, Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency, was reportedly one of the parties aggressively pursuing the acquisition of Razorfish, a $380 million revenue interactive agency that was ultimately acquired by Publicis earlier this year.”

The acquisition of The Barbarian Group, known for creating such cutting-edge digital experiences as The Subservient Chicken and this month’s augmented reality issue of Esquire magazine, is part of Cheil Worldwide’s long-term growth plans. By joining one of the world’s foremost digital creative powerhouses with Cheil’s well-established global network, Cheil is poised to expand its digital creative offerings in the US and beyond.

Cheil Worldwide is Korea’s largest marketing agency and the 16th largest advertising agency in the world, as ranked by Advertising Age. Established in 1973 with headquarters in Seoul, Korea, Cheil has 29 offices in 25 countries with close to 2,100 employees. Cheil offers a full portfolio of marketing communications services including advertising, digital, PR, sports marketing, exhibition and display production, and production of large-scale performance events.

“The concept of traditional vs. digital advertising is rapidly being replaced by the integrated solutions model demanded by advertisers in search of maximum ROI,” says Frank Connolly, Managing Director at AdMedia Partners. “This acquisition highlights, as part of that trend, the continuing global demand for leading interactive advertising agencies,” says Connolly.

As Chairman of 24/7 Real Media, Mr. Moore will focus on strengthening the company’s industry position, strategic relationships, recruitment and business development. Mr. Moore will also continue to work closely with WPP Digital to support the development and implementation of WPP’s digital initiatives.

“Dave and Jon have exemplified a formidable leadership team since late 2001,” said Mark Read, CEO, WPP Digital. “These changes give both executives new responsibilities that will be both challenging and rewarding, and further enhance the future of the company and WPP Digital.”

“I have spent more than a decade at the helm of 24/7 Real Media and have experienced the best and worst of the responsibility that comes with the CEO position. It is not an easy job, however,” said Mr. Moore. “Jonathan Hsu is an exceptional leader and brilliant strategist. He has consistently demonstrated an ability to identify new opportunities to grow the business. He will make an outstanding chief executive and I look forward to continuing our work together in these new roles. I love this business and look forward to continuing to build 24/7, WPP and our exciting industry.”

Mr. Hsu joined the company in March 2000, and as COO was instrumental in the company’s acquisition by WPP and numerous strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as Yahoo! and Dentsu. Previously, Mr. Hsu served as CFO, where he oversaw a 500 percent jump in revenue growth over four years. As Senior Vice President – Corporate Development and Strategic Planning, he was responsible for driving the company’s geographic and product line expansion, overseeing the acquisitions of Insight First in January 2002, Real Media Korea in December 2003, and Decide Interactive in August 2004.

“It has been an incredible experience working with a true visionary and leader like David, and I am honored to succeed him as CEO of 24/7 Real Media,” said Mr. Hsu. “With online ad spending set to grow double digits for years to come, there are outstanding opportunities for 24/7 to expand our relationships with advertisers and publishers, while maintaining the innovative technology development and exceptional customer service that set us apart.”

Prior to joining 24/7 Real Media, Mr. Hsu worked for JP Morgan Chase Securities, where he specialized in M&A activities for new economy companies, telecommunication firms, and financial sponsors. He also served as a venture capitalist at American Lead Ventures and founded a magazine distributed internationally by Time Warner.

Mr. Hsu holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Strategic Management from the Wharton School of Business and a B.A. in Economics from Harvard University.
