Through Alvenda’s use of Akamai, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM realized a 41 percent increase in sales per impression and a 10.5 times increase in interaction rates

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. & MINNEAPOLIS – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, and Alvenda, the only ecommerce-enabled advertising network, announced that they delivered the industry’s first online interactive ecommerce-enabled advertising campaign for 1-800-FLOWERS.COM during the recent Mother’s Day holiday. Akamai was chosen to accelerate performance of the Shoplets™ (shop-able advertisements) application, improve response time and reduce application load.

Alvenda enables customers to conveniently shop inside Shoplets, which turns an advertising unit into a checkout-enabled storefront without site visitors being “clicked off” the web site they are browsing. Shoplets operates as a display advertisement until customers interact with it by moving their mouse over it and ultimately clicking to expand it into a fully-functioning shopping space. As a result, Shoplets allows customers to browse products and even make purchases within it without leaving the publisher’s web site.

Alvenda came to Akamai for a reliable and scalable solution to help improve the Shoplets’ load time and handle the high number of sale responses and traffic spikes on Mother’s Day, one of the busiest online shopping days for its customer, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM. Having Akamai in place, Alvenda offloaded more than 99 percent of content to the Akamai platform, allowing them to optimize Shoplets performance, accelerate response times and provide a superior online shopping experience for customers. This integration gave 1-800-FLOWERS.COM the ability to deliver interactive shop-able advertisements without fail and drive a significant increase in sales.

Mother’s Day is one of the busiest shopping days for 1-800-FLOWERS.COM and a solution was needed that could scale to support the increased traffic spikes and order volumes demanded by such a campaign. Through Alvenda’s use of Akamai, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM was able to scale up and see measurable benefits to their business. The Alvenda Shoplets delivered 41 percent increase in sales per impression and a 10.5 times increase in interaction rates compared to the banner advertisements.

“We believe the majority of future online sales will happen offsite. Customers will be able to shop with brands wherever they happen to be whether they’re on YouTube, a favorite blogger Web site, or in Facebook,” said Wade Gerten, co-founder and CEO, Alvenda. “With innovative merchants like 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Alvenda is moving commerce forward to these touch points and is generating remarkable sales results.”

“Leveraging Akamai, we not only experienced 100 percent uptime of our platform, we were also able to reduce our application server load by more than 99 percent, while improving Shoplets response times by more than 90 percent,” added Gerten. “With Akamai, we don’t have to worry about Shoplets performance and whether our infrastructure would be able to cope with surges in user demands. We can rely on Akamai to provide our retail clients the best possible environment for consumers who expect an engaging, fast and interactive shopping experience.”

“The trend to deploy dynamic and interactive advertising such as the 1-800-FLOWERS.COM’s Mother’s Day’s campaign is expected to continue to grow. Akamai is key to providing our e-commerce customers with solutions that deliver fast, rich and engaging web sites,” said Pedro Santos, e-commerce strategist, Akamai. “We believe that by leveraging Akamai’s solutions, our customers can accelerate the delivery and performance of their dynamic content and applications online while optimizing site response times.”

(NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, announced online traffic statistics associated with live coverage of the funeral services of Michael Jackson.

Experiencing the second largest day ever in terms of total traffic on the Akamai network, the Company reported it delivered more than 2,185,000 live and on-demand streams in Flash® and Windows® Media formats. Total traffic on the Akamai network surpassed a rate of more than 2 terabits per second during the memorial service.
// ]]>

A real-time view of streaming on the Akamai EdgePlatform can be seen at: http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/dataviz3.html.

Consumer interest in online news regarding all aspects of Jackson’s life, death investigation and planned funeral proceedings has remained high since his death. Early on in the online streaming of the memorial services today, at about 1:00 pm EST, there was a peak on Akamai’s Net Usage Index for News (http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/nui/news/index.html) at 3,924,370 visitors per minute, with more than 3.3 million visitors per minute coming from North America. On June 25th, at about 6:30 EST, as word of Jackson’s death began to spread, traffic on the Net Usage Index for News spiked to 4,247,971 global visitors per minute at its peak as compared to average of approximately 2,000,000 visitors per minute globally. Seventy-five percent of visitors were accessing sites from within the United States. As a point of comparison, the largest day on the Akamai network in terms of total traffic on its network was the Obama Inauguration live streaming online in January 2009. Please see this press release for further data on that event: http://www.akamai.com/html/about/press/releases/2009/press_012009.html

“When a public figure of global prominence such as Michael Jackson passes away, the public’s desire for up to date information and news is rarely satiated,” said Robert Hughes, executive vice president of Global Sales, Services, and Marketing at Akamai. “Akamai’s network has seen a steady stream of online traffic when news of any sort related to Michael Jackson is updated, and we expected demand from a global online audience around the online streaming of his funeral would be no different. For an event of this scale, Akamai’s globally-distributed EdgePlatform is unique in its ability to bypass congestion points on the Internet, and to ensure a reliable, high-quality experience for our customers. While this event was supported without any issues for our broadcast customers, it is also important to point out that Akamai continued to deliver perfect quality of service for the remainder of our 2,800 enterprise customers. This is just the beginning of what is possible when broadcasting live to audiences around the world.”

Akamai also delivered 548 Gbps of live and on-demand Flash streams utilizing Adobe Flash technology.

“Given the widespread impact Michael Jackson had on the pop music scene, it’s no surprise millions of people watched his memorial service streamed live on the Web,” said Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager of Dynamic Media for Adobe. “We’re pleased a global audience was able to access and experience this high-profile event – as it happened – via the Adobe Flash Platform over the Akamai Network.”

Adobe Flash Player is on over 98 percent of connected computers and delivers approximately 80 percent of Web video worldwide, ensuring that content and applications are presented consistently in the format users want. For more information on the Adobe Flash Platform, please visit http://www.adobe.com/flashplatform.

MARINA, Calif. – Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) posted $1.16 billion in 2008 revenue, notching 30% improvement over 2007.

The U.S. market made up an estimated 57% of the global tally; combined geographies are forecast to grow at 19% in 2009.

Revenue attached to audiovisual verticals including professional video, video advertising, video advertising networks, CMS platforms, online music spins, UGV and podcasting totaled $550 million, or 47.3% of total billings, according to CDN Account Verticals and Revenue Performance 2006 – 2010, a rigorous analytics report published by AccuStream iMedia Research.

Professional video (including advertising) remains the most penetrated and lucrative audiovisual vertical, with 76.2% of views delivered through CDN contracts.

Going the other way, 20.4% of lower margin UGV volume was handled by CDNs, plus another 31.7% of online music radio spins and track plays.

Large media combines such as Google’s YouTube, AOL, Real Networks, Amazon, Yahoo and Comcast approach bandwidth provisioning as a core infrastructure precondition, taking that potential revenue base off the table.

Commercial market (retail and transit) value attending the delivery of audiovisual content (including self-hosted networks and CDN) was equivalent to $886 million in 2008, with bandwidth making up 60% of billable costs.

Bandwidth fees as a percentage of CDN contract value are forecast to tack downward through 2010. The report analyzes historical and current pricing and pricing models by contract type, including volume and rate alternatives.

Total media servers in deployment rose by 56.7% in 2008. Year end ’08 accounts under contract grew by 25% to 8,496.

Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) for the CDN group rose 1.8% in 2008 to $6,735, as the market pivots toward revenue growth linked more tightly to ROI-driven, value-added applications, reducing exposure to bandwidth commoditization.

Akamai (MRR up 21.4%) and Limelight Networks (MRR up 18.7%) significantly exceeded the CDN group MRR average.

“CDN content verticals and markets of opportunity are expanding as online experiences are transformed through a broadband medium powered by reach, scale and accountability,” commented research director Paul A. Palumbo.

“The infrastructure and application sophistication necessary to deliver broadband media continues to return healthy 50% – 65+% gross margins,” he added.

“In addition to the historic nature of the Inauguration, it is now clear that this event has driven unprecedented demand from a global online audience,” said Robert Hughes, executive vice president of Global Sales, Services, and Marketing at Akamai. “With the Inauguration occurring during work-day hours in the U.S., we witnessed record numbers of live streams served in support of many leading news businesses. For an event of this scale, Akamai’s globally-distributed EdgePlatform is unique in its ability to bypass congestion points on the Internet, and to ensure a reliable, high-quality experience for our customers. While this event was supported flawlessly for our broadcast customers, it is also important to point out that Akamai continued to deliver perfect quality of service for the remainder of our 2,800 enterprise customers. This is just the beginning of what is possible when broadcasting live to audiences around the world.”

Today also represented a single-day peak on the Akamai EdgePlatform for concurrent live streams utilizing Adobe Flash technology, serving over 800 Gbps of Flash streaming.

“It is an honor to provide the underlying media technology required for leading broadcasters and media organizations, as they delivered live online coverage of this momentous event,” said Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager of Dynamic Media at Adobe. “With so many viewers eager to see the ceremonies and hear the first words of our 44th President, we knew the combination of Adobe Flash technology and Akamai would bring this inauguration to the broadest possible online audience.”

Total traffic on the Akamai network surpassed a rate of more than 2 terabits per second at approximately 12:15 p.m. ET. Akamai also delivered over 12,000,000 requests per second at the same time.

Akamai’s Net Usage Index for News (http://www.akamai.com/html/technology/nui/news/index.html) also recorded a significant traffic peak today. Akamai’s index is the world’s first and only daily Web traffic report with information on aggregate total visitors per minute to over 100 news portal sites. The index indicated that at approximately 11:45 a.m. ET today, over 5.4 million visitors per minute were looking for news and information content online.

Adobe Flash Player is on over 98 percent of connected computers and delivers more than 80 percent of Web video worldwide, ensuring that content and applications are presented consistently in the format users want.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, announced that Gorilla Nation Media, a diversified online media company, is leveraging Akamai’s solutions to deliver and accelerate more than 55 global sites.

Exclusively representing hundreds of leading websites in various vertical markets, Gorilla Nation Media develops leading consumer destination sites that enable advertisers to reach targeted audience segments and demographics. All of the Gorilla Nation destinations are rich, dynamic sites with ever-changing content – including videos, images, contests, and discussion boards – and require a globally-distributed platform to deliver rich, dynamically-generated content. For rich, interactive websites, like the many in Gorilla Nation’s portfolio, the ability to accelerate page downloads, increase consumption and improve the overall site experience leads to increased and repeat visitors, incremental ad revenue, page view increases and an improved competitive edge.

“Akamai covers all the bases. Akamai sees our vision and provides Gorilla Nation with innovative solutions to support our expanding business model,” said Alex Godelman, Vice President of Technology, at Gorilla Nation Media. “Akamai is a true partner. When Gorilla Nation realized the need for an alternative CDN service provider, there was no need for an exhaustive review. We went straight to Akamai.”

Since leveraging Akamai, Gorilla Nation is experiencing significantly higher download success rates for rich media, compared to the success rates using other CDN providers. Gorilla Nation has quickly realized the effectiveness of Akamai’s services and the resulting benefits: a much faster experience for the end user, and reduced infrastructure and bandwidth costs that are passed along to its publishers by offloading the traffic to Akamai’s globally-distributed platform.

Gorilla Nation is also leveraging Akamai’s advanced services portfolio. Through the use of Akamai’s Stream OS solution, the company has delivered many successful live events, some garnering more than 60,000 concurrent users. When preparing for prior live events, the Gorilla Nation team would spend hours developing custom solutions for each webcast. With Stream OS’ Live Event Manager module, the efficiencies are many, from easy point and click technology to the ability to toggle between different content sources.

“Akamai’s broad set of solutions are a perfect match for the entire Gorilla Nation portfolio. With Akamai in place, Gorilla Nation delivers faster Web site performance for highly interactive content, scales capacity on demand to support peak traffic, and improves the user experience,” said Tim Napoleon, Chief Strategist for Digital Media at Akamai. “Gorilla Nation’s dedication to building targeted sites with dynamic, personalized content is a critical step toward making online advertising a success moving forward. Akamai looks forward to cultivating our relationship with Gorilla Nation as they continue to pioneer innovation in the online publishing and advertising worlds.”

Enterprises have long relied upon content delivery networks (CDNs) to help ensure the scalability, performance, and availability of their static Web sites. Many CDNs, though, have not evolved to meet the delivery challenges posed by today’s sophisticated interactive content. While dynamically-generated content offers an unprecedented opportunity to engage with consumers, it also presents businesses with a new challenge: richer content takes longer to load in a Web page. As site traffic increases, generating pages on-the-fly for thousands of consumers simultaneously can lead to increased delays — and even failures — in delivering content. Akamai’s advanced acceleration solutions are designed to address these challenges.

About Gorilla Nation Media, LLC

E-commerce web sites are becoming richer – offering more dynamic content, applications, and video. To engage shoppers, these features must load quickly and perform as expected. Vehix is leveraging the globally-distributed Akamai Platform to improve performance across its site, including image delivery, dynamic elements – such as search inventory, research pages, ratings and forums – and video assets, creating a complete high-quality online experience and user engagement for consumers and car dealers through its online community.

“From comparing information on resale values to researching for a new car model, our site is an active marketplace where consumers and dealers gather the latest car information,” said Michael van Thiel, chief technology officer, Vehix. “And as online communities become more sophisticated, consumers seek far more innovative, personalized features as part of their web experiences. Therefore, we’ve added more dynamic content, video and applications to our site that ensure an engaging, interactive experience for our users and dealers in which they can search, preview and watch video reliably and quickly when looking for car information. We have seen improvement in speed double in certain parts of the country and expect more as we fully optimize Akamai’s offering. Akamai is the clear choice for us to deliver such an engaging online user experience.”

Leveraging Akamai’s Media Delivery solution, e-commerce customers such as Vehix can deliver and deploy video quickly and effectively, allowing customers to view rich media without the typical loading, buffering and playback issues that often plagues streaming video. Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator solution is designed to speed up and accelerate the delivery of dynamic and interactive content and transactions. As a result, e-commerce customers have indicated that Akamai’s solutions help them meet today’s consumer expectations for a fast-loading, always available site, regardless of the number of interactive elements, dynamically-generated content, or variance in Internet conditions.

“The trend to leverage online video, user forums and reviews, as well as other social media and interactive features on e-commerce sites, is expected to continue as retailers discover the real value of rich media and Internet applications. Akamai is key to ensuring this multi-platform approach via our broad solution set,” said Brad Rinklin, vice president, global marketing, Akamai. “We believe that by leveraging Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator and Media Delivery solutions, our customers can not only accelerate the delivery and performance of their dynamic content and applications online, but can also provide the best possible online shopping environment for end-users who expect an engaging and interactive site.”

CAMBRIDGE, MA – December 9, 2008 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, announced today that Nobelprize.org, the official website of the Nobel Foundation, the organization who arranges the world famous Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies, is using Akamai’s Media Delivery solution to stream this year’s ceremony live online on December 10, 2008. This year, Nobelprize.org experienced a four-fold increase in video traffic when the Nobel Prize Laureates were announced. Having used its own infrastructure to stream the event in the past, Nobelprize.org realized they needed to leverage Akamai’s global platform for events moving forward in order to provide a high-quality, scalable experience for all interested parties around the globe.
-->

Hans Mehlin, Director of Technology at Nobelprize.org, said, “Due to the increase in traffic we began to experience recently when the Laureates were announced, we want to ensure there would be unrestricted access to the streaming of this year’s Prize Award Ceremony. Having used Akamai previously, we approached them to utilize their streaming solution to support this year’s event.”

Utilizing its network of over 40,000 servers in over 70 countries, Akamai’s Media Delivery solution has been relied upon to support the streaming of major news, sporting and entertainment events to global audiences. Customers of Akamai’s services pay on the basis of the capacity they use rather than having to maintain large and expensive data centres, or lease large amounts of bandwidth in advance from an ISP in expectation of audience size and likely demand.

Brad Rinklin, Vice President, Global Marketing at Akamai said, “The Nobel Prize Award Ceremony is a global event of great significance and importance. The Internet is a perfect medium to enable a worldwide audience to experience live the proceedings at this year’s event. We’re excited to be able to support the award ceremony this year.”

Akamai Media Delivery offers a complete solution for companies to build successful digital media businesses by helping media providers deliver and monetize media assets quickly and effectively. Akamai’s global streaming platform extends reach instantly, bypassing traditional server and bandwidth limitations, and can handle peak traffic conditions and large file sizes with ease—all without requiring additional infrastructure. Akamai Media Delivery also enables the secure delivery of innovative rich media experiences—from video sharing to high-definition video online.

About Nobel Web AB

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, announced today that it will take a restructuring action in the fourth quarter to reduce certain operating costs. The Company expects to use the ongoing savings generated by this action and its continuing cash from operations to support investments in key growth opportunities for content delivery, application acceleration, and its advertising industry solutions, as well as for further international expansion.

“We have not changed our business outlook,” said JD Sherman, CFO of Akamai. “However, we want to ensure that we can keep investing for growth even in the current economic climate.”

As a result of these cost cutting measures, Akamai expects to take a restructuring charge of approximately $4 million this quarter for severance and related expenses. These costs are anticipated to be partially offset by a net reduction in non-cash stock-based compensation of $0.8 million, reflecting a modification to certain stock-based awards previously granted to the affected employees. Approximately 110 employees, or 7 percent of Akamai’s worldwide employee population, will be affected. Additionally, the Company expects to recognize a loss on sublease income of approximately $2.5 million related to certain leased facilities.

ATLANTA/CAMBRIDGE, MA – November 24, 2008 – EyeWonder, Inc., a leading innovator in interactive digital advertising technologies and services, and Akamai Technologies, Inc., the global leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, announced today that they delivered the first in-stream advertisements via Microsoft Silverlight for New York Magazine’s “Where’s Rogan?” interactive campaign.

The “Where’s Rogan?” series aired in eight weekly segments on New York Magazine’s Website at www.nymag.com/rogan/ and is a tongue-in-cheek expose of eco-conscious fashion designer Rogan Gregory, who goes missing during New York’s Fashion Week. During the Webisodes, viewers can control the advertising experience by interacting with product placement bugs and tickers from three advertisers involved with the project: Olay, TRESemme and Continental Airlines. During one episode, a ticker advertisement for Continental Airlines runs across the bottom of the screen. When a viewer clicks on it, a separate window opens to the airline’s main booking page, allowing users to book a flight while watching the video. Another episode features an Olay product placement bug which, when clicked, pauses the video to show the viewer a mini commercial. When the ad finishes, the video resumes playing.

“New York Magazine’s use of the Universal In-Stream Ad Framework (UIF) for this campaign highlights EyeWonder’s continued innovation in the video space,” said Chief Information Officer Ricky McClellen. “Viewers benefit because they decide which advertising they want to see and the length of time they want to see it without disrupting the video they’re watching. Advertisers benefit because their ads drive higher interaction rates, creating product awareness in consumers. Publishers are able to monetize their content and create new advertising space.”

EyeWonder integrated its UIF, an open standard platform that enables a “create once, play anywhere” ad solution to drive scale within the in-stream advertising industry, with Akamai’s open source code media player framework. This integration gives New York Magazine’s Silverlight-based video player the ability to deliver interactive in-stream advertising. The video player application impacts the way consumers experience video content and enables business models by controlling how and when ads are delivered. To support this movement, Akamai and industry leaders launched Openvideoplayer.com to facilitate open standards and best practices for video player applications that support a wide range of advertising technologies.

“New York Magazine’s project is a great inaugural example of the power of Akamai’s Media Framework, showcased through Microsoft Silverlight,” said Tim Napoleon, Chief Strategist for Digital Media at Akamai. “The Media Framework enabled EyeWonder to quickly and easily develop a dynamic and interactive advertising experience that lent itself to increasing brand awareness for the companies involved. The ability to deliver a high-quality experience for consumers and brands is the ultimate goal of Akamai’s open Media Framework. We look forward to watching how users interact with the ads interspersed throughout the video as well as giving advertisers a vehicle to monitor how their ads are received.”

“The ‘Where’s Rogan?’ project is another great example of how the robust technology behind Silverlight can create unique online media experiences that engage audiences in a very powerful way,” said Brian Goldfarb, Director of the Developer Platform Group at Microsoft Corp. “This project, in collaboration with Akamai and EyeWonder, opens up new doors for advertisers to present their brands in dynamic and interactive ways.”

Viewers must download the Silverlight player plug-in to watch “Where’s Rogan?” episodes. The first installment aired October 27, and the final aired November 20.

Leveraging published reports and information available on its network, Akamai’s quarterly report provides insight into key Internet statistics such as origin of attack traffic, network outages and broadband connectivity levels across the globe. As the Company’s third published edition, the report also now provides a quarter-over-quarter view into trends.

Global connectivity saw big advances in the third quarter, with various undersea cable projects getting underway or nearing completion, the commercial launch of WiMAX services in a number of countries, and the announcement of fiber-to-the-premises services that will bring gigabit-speed connections to subscribers in Japan, the Ukraine, and the Netherlands.

While global Internet penetration remained stable compared to the second quarter of 2008, interesting trends emerged within United States-based Web traffic. Delaware, Washington, Virginia, Texas, and Georgia all experienced quarterly declines of more than 40% for narrowband connectivity (<256 Kbps) as compared to the second quarter. South Dakota, Maine, and Hawaii nearly doubled their rates of high broadband connectivity (>5 Mbps) quarter over quarter, while Oklahoma and Kentucky are the only two U.S. states to see consecutive quarter-over-quarter growth in high broadband connectivity since Q4 2007. Virginia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey have the highest levels of Internet penetration in the United States.

Regarding global connection speeds, South Korea had the highest levels of high broadband connectivity for the third straight quarter. In the United States, Delaware also maintained its top position, with 55% of connections to Akamai occurring at 5 Mbps or greater. Looking at observed “narrowband” connections, Mayotte and Equatorial Guinea were the “slowest” countries, with 97% and 94% of connections to Akamai, respectively, occurring at speeds below 256 Kbps. In the United States, the District of Columbia and Washington State continued to have the highest percentages of observed connections below 256 Kbps. However, these regions also saw a significant quarter-over-quarter decline in narrowband connection percentages, down 25% and 46% respectively as compared to the second quarter.

Akamai’s unique level of visibility into the connection speeds of systems issuing requests to the Akamai network has created a one-of-a-kind view into broadband adoption around the globe. Leveraging that data, Akamai’s quarterly “State of the Internet” report identifies both the countries and U.S. states with the fastest and slowest average connection speeds exhibited by IP addresses originating from those respective geographies.
“Both candidates’ election campaigns redefined the importance of digital marketing and provided excellent real-life examples of how today’s marketing and media professionals can harness the power of social media, video and mobile technologies aimed at the Facebook generation,” said Drew Ianni, chairman of programming for ad:tech North America. “It was a truly remarkable turnout, which confirms our belief that ad:tech is the must-attend event for marketers looking for insights into what is next and new in their field.”

This year’s ad:tech New York drew its standard large crowd of marketing and advertising professionals, just shy of last year’s record-breaking 10,000 attendees, who were eager to gain practical and actionable insights for navigating today’s challenging marketing and advertising landscape. The conference — gathered under the larger theme of how digital is changing ALL media — explored key themes of media convergence, provided new findings on measurement and presented a variety of advice, case studies and insights to provide marketers with the tools for fully engaging consumers at all levels of media interactivity.

Led by keynote addresses from influential industry leaders including CNN/U.S. President Jonathan Klein and Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide Chairman and CEO Shelly Lazarus, the conference also unveiled an outlook of continued industry growth and opportunity, even while acknowledging the leaner times ahead. In his keynote address, Geoffrey Ramsey, CEO of eMarketer projected that while traditional media may shrink in the midst of the global economic downturn, online ad spending is likely to grow by 14.5% in 2009.

Another highly anticipated session was the ad:tech Power Panel titled “The Future of Measurement—How Do We Define the New Media Currency.” Featuring for the first time together executives from Quantcast, Nielsen Online, Hitwise, comScore and Microsoft’s Analytics and Atlas Institute, the panel examined the lessons learned so far in measurement, in an effort to elevate the discussion and explore the future possibilities in an ever-changing media landscape. As audience preferences for media consumption change, marketers have a need for more sophisticated metrics and measurement techniques for digital media.

The diverse slate of panel and breakout sessions covered emerging areas for opportunity, such as advertising through widgets and mobile marketing, and debated recent trends. For instance in the session titled “Will the Long-Tail Go Bankrupt?,” panelists questioned whether the popular long-tail marketing concept is a viable money-making model, in light of current economic conditions. The two-day ad:tech exhibition featured more than 300 exhibitors representing the full spectrum of the digital marketing marketplace. Akamai, comScore, Friendster, eMarketer and Rextopia joined the line-up again, as well as industry heavyweights Yahoo! and Google.

“We received great feedback from our attendees and exhibitors, who were pleasantly surprised at the huge turnout again at this year’s event,” said Don Knox, ad:tech Global VP. “We are encouraged by this response and excited to continue developing ad:tech events that provide value for an industry so full of exploration, innovation and opportunity.”

The next national ad:tech event takes place in San Francisco from April 21-23, 2009 at the Moscone Center West.

(NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced that Ankama, the developer of the massive multiplayer online role-playing game DOFUS, has chosen Akamai’s Electronic Software Delivery and Dynamic Site Accelerator solutions to handle the surge of gamers flocking to its online games and websites, and to address the traffic spikes following the release of updates on the DOFUS website.

Owing to the international success of its role-playing game DOFUS now has 10 million members worldwide. The French headquartered Ankama group, with over 300 employees worldwide, recognized its need to improve its download and response times on its online gaming websites in order to provide demanding gamers an excellent user experience.

<!-- PUT THIS TAG IN DESIRED LOCATION OF SLOT Digital_Media_Blog-large_rectangle_runofsite

Ankama’s main goal was to manage the dramatic spikes in website traffic that could occur whenever the company pushes out a DOFUS update. To handle these recurring load increases, Ankama sought a reliable partner who could meet this challenge successfully and thus, ensure the online distribution of its updates with the best possible quality and price ratio.

Akamai, a benchmark partner of top gaming publishers, recommended its Electronic Software Delivery solution, which allows all types of software to be delivered with optimum performance, making it easier for users to download online games from the Ankama website.

“After an initial one-month testing phase, Akamai’s download solution performed very well and accomplished its main goal – that was to handle massive traffic spikes for Ankama website and sometimes even exceeding 24 Gbps,” said Jerome Renoux, Major Account Executive of Digital Media at Akamai. “Our content routing capabilities combined with our strong commitment to service quality were also key factors that set us apart from our competitors. The performance was immediately reflected in the sharp rise in the number of game subscriptions recorded on Ankama’s DOFUS game website after implementing the Akamai’s solutions.”

After this conclusive trial period, Akamai subsequently recommended the Dynamic Site Accelerator solution, a unique service that accelerates the speed, scope and performance of websites featuring the richest interactive content. Akamai currently delivers 10-20% of all Internet traffic worldwide and has the largest web content delivery and acceleration platform, with more than 40,000 servers connected to 900 networks in 70 countries. The Akamai solutions mean that Ankama does not have to deploy its own global download platform or worry about possibly overloading its own platform when releasing new patches, upgrades and demos.

“We spent several months looking for a service provider to ensure optimal bandwidth quality for both normal everyday web traffic and dramatic load increases. Akamai was the only provider that was able to come up with an effective solution to this twofold issue. Since partnering with Akamai, our technical teams have been able to breathe more easily,” commented Thomas Bahon, Ankama’s Director of Products.

Bahon added, “The solutions deployed by Akamai live up to their promises and provide the quality of service that we want to offer our global gamers on a daily basis so that we can keep expanding internationally and secure our position as leader of France’s online gaming market. We needed a partner that could truly support us in achieving our ambitions. In addition to increasing the ease of installing download solutions for our users and the fact that Akamai now takes care of all our storage needs, we have observed a marked increase in the number of hits on our websites from online gamers and visitors ever since we set up this platform.”

About the ANKAMA Group
Founded by Anthony Roux, Camille Chafer, and Emmanuel Darras in Roubaix, France in 2001, ANKAMA is an independent group which produces digital creations and employs over 300 people.
CAMBRIDGE, MA – November 11, 2008 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, has further extended the time-to-value benefit of its Web Application Accelerator(SM) managed service with the general availability of Configuration Manager(SM), a new tool used to simplify the configuration of application-specific optimizations. Configuration Manager provides access to all the rich, flexible application delivery options for the Akamai Web Application Accelerator service through an easy to use interface enabling users to quickly configure and add new Web-enabled applications to be delivered using the Akamai Platform.

Included as an extension of Configuration Manager is Akamai’s real-world integrated staging environment for testing of configuration changes made prior to production deployment. By testing application configuration changes on Akamai’s staging environment, the risks associated with live testing are greatly reduced. Furthermore, the need to purchase and manage additional infrastructure for pre-production test environments is eliminated.

“Akamai has taken an important and valuable step with Configuration Manager,” said Peter Christy, Principal, Internet Research Group. “By formalizing the configuration of the many Akamai application acceleration services into a well-defined metadata representation, Akamai has provided the means by which customers can specify, adapt, replicate and deploy those optimizations that deliver the most effective outcome on their specific applications, as well as take advantage of best-practices learning from Akamai. The use of metadata also greatly simplifies testing and staging to production. As icing on the cake, Akamai also provides an intuitive and easy to use visual tool for the construction and modification of these settings.”

Customers like Autotask Corporation Network Administrator Toby Harris find Configuration Manager simple to use. “By choosing answers to simple questions about desired application configuration and application performance, availability, scale and security, Akamai’s Configuration Manager automatically generates the configuration files for me. It allows me to make application changes quickly.”

“Enterprises choose Akamai managed application acceleration services because they gain an almost immediate time-to-value,” said Willie M. Tejada, vice president, Application Performance Solutions, Akamai Technologies. “With Configuration Manager, we’ve further extended our time-to-value advantage for accelerating enterprise applications such as SAP®, Oracle® and Microsoft® by simplifying the application configuration and integration process. We’ve also created the Akamai application staging network where customers can test configuration changes with full version control and at no additional cost, ensuring their end users are not adversely affected when changes go live.”

Configuration Manager is generally available today and at no additional cost to Web Application Accelerator customers. Akamai Professional Services packages are available to customers opting for complete turnkey application integration, testing and tuning.

Akamai’s Web Application Accelerator service leverages Akamai’s globally-deployed platform to deliver consistent, improved application performance for enterprise customers and SaaS providers. Akamai accelerates customers’ dynamic Web applications using a number of unique techniques including dynamic mapping, route optimization, advanced communications protocols and connection optimization technology. As a result, Akamai customers enjoy increased user adoption of Web-enabled applications for greater productivity and decreased support costs.

CAMBRIDGE, MA – November 03, 2008 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today unveiled its Insight for Publishers service (www.akamai.com/insight), a real-time solution that helps online publishers develop new ad strategies in order to better monetize their advertising inventory. Insight for Publishers is available immediately for all U.S.-based Akamai customers.

As part of the Company’s recently announced Advertising Decision Solutions line, Insight for Publishers enables online content providers to more easily identify in real-time and sell their most valuable audiences across their owned and operated properties. Unlike other ad targeting solutions, Insight for Publishers can be enabled without costly and time consuming manual page changes, leading to faster time-to-market and stronger ad revenue strategies.

“Akamai is helping our customers act on valuable audience intelligence right away- enabling publishers to provide advertisers with better access to meaningful consumer segments, thus driving increased advertising revenue,” said Mike Afergan, Akamai’s CTO and senior vice president of Advertising Decision Solutions. “Providing a quick and easy way to gain in-depth knowledge about a site’s audiences, from simple browsing activity to sophisticated custom behaviors, this service provides valuable cross-site audience intelligence for publishers to make smart advertising decisions.”

Quick, Seamless Implementation Reduces Time-to-Readiness, Improves ROI
Insight for Publishers enables customers to use their existing Akamai configuration to package and sell audience segments. This simple integration of anonymous data with their existing ad logic allows customers to act on behavioral data in real time for instantaneous targeting of ads, increasing their overall cost per thousand impressions (CPMs). In addition, the Akamai product gives publishers the ability to generate audience segments without the use of pixels. This simpler technology removes the key technical barrier of pixel tagging and can allow for more accurate targeting capabilities, quicker turnaround on advertising campaign launches, and a higher ROI on advertising investments.

Leading Publishers among Early Adopters
Internet conglomerate IAC has leveraged Akamai’s content delivery services for several years. IAC Advertising Solutions (IAC/AS), a division of IAC, is an early customer of Akamai’s Insight for Publishers. IAC/AS tested and now relies on Akamai’s solution to help bundle its audience into desirable targeted segments across Web properties like Evite and Citysearch, and the new IAC Network of 24+ leading and emerging sites.

“The Akamai solution is faster and more efficient to implement than any other behavioral targeting product,” said Ali Mirian, director of product management at IAC/AS. “It’s easy for us to unify disparate data and, it’s almost implementation-free on the advertiser side. Akamai brings us speed to market and robust, precise targeting.”

As one of the nation’s largest diversified media companies, Hearst Corporation has ownership of leading daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, cable networks, Internet businesses, and television production companies. When selling advertisers access to key demographics across multiple sites, Hearst’s goal is to increase the value of their ad products and inventory. Already using Akamai to deliver content for their many sites, Insight for Publishers provided an easy solution to gather anonymous data on users to improve CPMs.

Benefits to Publishers

* Increase ad revenue—Insight for Publishers provides a view into audience composition and anonymous browsing behaviors across site properties to drive more targeted and creative ad strategies, and to increase the value of non-premium site inventory
* Launch new campaigns fast—Very limited set-up time lets publishers launch ad targeting strategies faster and more cost effectively.
* Make precise audience decisions—Insight for Publishers can act on behavioral data in real time to make instantaneous ad targeting decisions by integrating with the publisher’s existing ad logic.
* Integrate with your existing ad server—Insight for Publishers is completely media-and technology-agnostic.
* Leverage social media—Audience insight can translate to immediate value within user-generated content communities.
* Maintain personal privacy—Insight for Publishers relies solely on anonymous and non-personally identifiable end user information, maintaining the integrity of data and privacy policies.

About Advertising Decision Solutions
As a result, publishers will be able provide advertisers with better access to relevant consumers, strengthening the relationship with those advertisers and driving increased advertising revenue. In addition, advertisers will benefit by seeing greater return on investment and improved ad campaign performance, while cutting waste from their ad budgets by reaching their intended audience at the right time. Finally, consumers, often faced with irrelevant online advertising clutter, will enjoy greater advertising relevance and continued growth in the amount of content that is available for free because it is supported by advertising.

Protecting Consumer Privacy
Akamai already powers the online efforts of many of the Internet’s largest publishers and ad networks, as well as hundreds of leading consumer brands. Akamai’s Advertising Decision Solutions will build on the company’s unique and trusted position in the online industry.

As members of the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI), Akamai and acerno are committed to maintaining both user privacy and customer confidentiality. All of Akamai’s Advertising Decision Solutions, as well as acerno’s services, rely solely on anonymous and non-personally identifiable end user information.

“Akamai’s new Advertising Decision Solutions are a critical advancement in our product portfolio, designed to stimulate the economic model of online advertising by bringing greater simplicity and effectiveness to both ad buyers and sellers,” said Paul Sagan, president and CEO of Akamai. “As a trusted and strategic partner to today’s leading online retailers, publishers, and advertisers, supporting an estimated $84 billion in e-commerce transactions on our network for U.S. retailers alone, Akamai’s goal is to offer the industry’s most efficient online advertising solutions, while being a leader in upholding consumer privacy. Our investment in developing the Advertising Decision Solutions line over the past two years and acquiring acerno today, represent a strategic next step for Akamai.”

Mike Afergan, Akamai’s CTO and senior vice president of Advertising Decision Solutions, added, “We plan to leverage and grow acerno’s unique industry co-operative to enhance our new solution line. Our combined capabilities with acerno should benefit the eco-system of ad networks, online publishers and Internet advertisers by providing them with real-time, actionable data to serve more relevant marketing messages.
“This is a big win for the online advertising industry,” said Tom Sperry, president and CEO of acerno. “Greater precision in the advertising world reduces inefficiency, so advertisers earn a higher return on their investment. Together, Akamai and acerno will be able to create a unique solution for advertisers to expand their reach of customers across multiple publishers and networks, while leveraging predictive and descriptive modeling for improving conversion rates.
Many of the Internet’s leading retailers currently contribute anonymous data to acerno’s information co-op. This data is used in acerno’s predictive models to determine why online shoppers actually browse, add merchandise to carts and eventually buy. In turn, this allows co-op members access to the most comprehensive source of information about what millions of online shoppers are looking to purchase and when they are likely to buy.

“Tom Sperry and Dave Hinton, chief operating officer of acerno, have assembled a first-class team, designed a set of breakthrough services, and built trusted relationships with a valuable set of clients,” Sagan added. “We look forward to welcoming the entire acerno team to Akamai and to working together to build even more value for our customers.”

SAN MATEO, Calif. – BlackArrow, the independent provider of multiplatform ad-management systems for viewer-controlled video, has released a Connector (software development kit) that integrates its ad-management system with Akamai’s Media Framework, a valuable resource for the rapid development of video player applications. This integration allows broadband video providers to ad-enable video content distributed using Akamai’s Media Framework. BlackArrow is also participating in the Open Video Player initiative, a community site intended to facilitate the development and sharing of open standards and best practices for video player applications that support a wide range of advertising technologies.

By integrating Akamai’s Media Framework with BlackArrow, premium content owners and publishers can adopt turnkey video player solutions to better maximize the return from their digital video content. This reduces the complexity of developing ad-supported video players, speeds deployments and stimulates new advertising revenue opportunities.

“It’s critical that we make it easier to integrate and deploy advertising solutions, given the escalating demand to monetize video content. BlackArrow’s support for the Akamai Media Framework and participation in the Open Video Player initiative addresses this demand,” said Tim Napoleon, chief strategist for digital media, Akamai. “Together, we can enable content providers to more easily develop and deliver ad-supported broadband video content.”

BlackArrow’s multiplatform ad-management system enables video content providers and distributors to optimize and enhance their ad-supported video programming and ad-sales opportunities. Using the BlackArrow system, they can now offer their advertisers new ad types, sponsorship packages and campaigns that combine ad units in unique ways to boost brand and product awareness — generating added value for content providers and advertisers alike.

“The BlackArrow and Akamai systems work together to provide an optimal platform from which to monetize premium content, and reflects BlackArrow’s support for open standards,” said Chris Hock, senior vice president, product management, BlackArrow. “We’ve built an extensive network of broadband ecosystem partners, and our integration with Akamai furthers our goals of reducing the complexity of integrating multiple systems, while ensuring seamless deployments of the BlackArrow ad-management system.”

Built from the ground up for video, the BlackArrow system helps content providers and distributors solve the challenges created by today’s fragmented audiences who increasingly view video programming distributed over broadband, video on demand and other platforms outside of linear television.

The BlackArrow system dynamically contracts, targets, traffics and reports on advertising inventory to maximize revenues from ad-supported video programming. Because the BlackArrow system works across any combination of ad types, ad-sales models, distribution or syndication strategies, BlackArrow’s clients can more effectively generate new revenue streams from ad-supported video, while preserving critical relationships with their advertisers.

The BlackArrow Connector for the Open Video Player Initiative is available now, at www.openvideoplayer.com, in the Connectors tab within the Download folder.

Solution Aims to Reduce Authoring Costs and Offer New Revenue Opportunities to Publishers

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – January 6, 2009 – Ascent Media Group announced today that it has teamed with Akamai Technologies, Inc. and Sofatronic to create an integrated digital workflow and distribution solution for the production, hosting and delivery of BD Live™ functionality for Blu-ray Discs.

Available through Ascent Media’s Blink Digital, the platform provides a more efficient and cost effective way for movie studios and content creators to harness the full power of BD Live’s Internet-enabled features, such as bonus content, online community, and interactive and e-commerce applications. Live demonstrations of the technology will be held January 8-9, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. during the International CES Conference in Las Vegas, NV at the MGM Grand Hotel in the Signature Suite (entrance located at 145 East Harmon Ave.).

“In partnership with industry leaders Akamai and Sofatronic, we are able to offer studios a new solution to BD Live functionality which simplifies the process of delivering this new and exciting interactive experience to the consumer,” said Jose Royo, CEO of Ascent Media Group. “Our head-to-toe package still leaves room for flexibility, plus our best-in-breed partnership allows us to deliver high-quality performance with greater efficiencies for our studio and Blu-ray distribution partners.”

Under the joint initiative, Sofatronic is responsible for the development of a new software platform based off its Kaleidoscope™ technology, a development platform for interactive entertainment on Blu-ray. Akamai’s global distribution platform will enable Internet-connected devices to support large file downloads and acceleration of rich, interactive media content and applications. Blink Digital is responsible for providing creative delivery, design, authoring and programming services and BD Live integration for high quality Blu-ray Disc production.

“Blu-Ray is one of the first convergent devices to hit scale in the connected living room,” said Akamai’s Chief Strategist, Digital Media, Tim Napoleon. “Studios recognize the power of the Internet, and with that, the entertainment paradigm is shifting. BD Live is designed to help studios build social communities around entertainment content and get more for their investment through a platform for merchandising brands, promoting future sales and creating direct relationships with consumers. Akamai’s expertise in delivering rich, dynamic content coupled with Sofatronic’s unmatched BD Live development tools and Blink Digital’s proven track record of high-quality authoring services, will give studios an edge when developing a BD Live experience.”

Together, the three companies have addressed many of the outstanding industry issues that previous BD Live platforms have experienced by providing improved authoring tools, better disc quality assurance, increased menu functionality, secure retailing interface, improved bonus content download times, and fixed disc pricing.

“Sofatronic is exclusively focused on Blu-ray and interactive TV technology development,” said Isaac Larbi, CEO of Sofatronic USA. “Through this partnership, we are better able to meet consumer demand for progressive Blu-ray entertainment by offering a seamless one-stop development solution to studios and Blu-ray distribution partners.”

BD Live offers a wide array of interactive features to the home entertainment ecosystem. With the highly interactive BD Live platform, personalized avatars can be created, subtitles can be frequently updated and viewers can simultaneously interact with others while watching a movie. By instantly connecting users to the Web and empowering them to browse and download online content with special features, new trailers and games, BD Live enables content creators to deliver an interactive service, as opposed to a static product that becomes obsolete once it has been shipped.
